Summer Energy Savings
Several months ago Master Pack posted an article about some of the energy savings achieved by adding spray foam to your home. With Summer approaching, we thought we would revisit a few of the benefits of spray foam insulation that can significantly help reduce your energy bill. This is especially true for California residents as we enter a fourth year of drought.
Electricity and Hydropower
Over the past 4 years California has continued to experience high temperatures with very little rain in the winter and spring months. Before the current drought, hydropower, such as dams, provided roughly 18 to 20 percent of electricity for businesses and residents of California. That number is now down to about 12 percent. This may not seem like a huge number but thinking about the scale of California it effects about 1 out of 5 people. Using less water daily will obviously help mitigate the drought conditions. A less apparent solution would be to have more energy efficient buildings to help combat the water crisis.
Spray Foam Reduces Energy Costs
Poorly insulated buildings can lose up 40% of their energy through air infiltration. Limiting the amount of energy used in homes and businesses could lessen the demands on the environment and energy resources. Spray foam provides a viable solution to substandard insulated buildings.
For example, a poorly insulated building during the summer may need to use utilities, such as an air conditioner, for longer periods of time to keep the building cool. This creates an unnecessary drain on valuable power sources.
By Lessening electrical use in our homes and businesses, we can help maintain precious energy resources and save on monthly energy bills. Spray foam insulation can save up to 20-30 percent on utility bills by simply filling up voids or openings where air and moisture may permeate. Additionally, Spray foam maintains its structure and does not shrink or change over time. As a result, buildings with spray foam will provide proper insulation and other benefits for several years.
